Its core principle is "grinding" rather than "cutting." Diamond particles on the drill bit's surface rub against the workpiece surface at high speed, like a grinding wheel, grinding the material into powder bit by bit, thus forming a complete circular hole. Because it is a coring operation, only a circular area is ground, leaving the center (the core) intact. 3 Types


1) Electroplated Diamond Thin-Wall Drills

  • Process: A layer of diamond particles is attached to the surface of a steel base through electroplating.
  • Features: Relatively inexpensive, with high sharpness, it is ideal for intermittent dry drilling operations (such as on renovation sites). It is the most common and widely used type on the market. However, the wear layer is thin, resulting in a relatively short lifespan.

 

2) Sintered Diamond Thin-Wall Drills

  • Process: Diamond particles are mixed with metal powder (such as cobalt or tungsten) and sintered at high temperatures to form a very thick diamond layer.
  • Features: Extremely wear-resistant, with a long lifespan, it is particularly suitable for long-term continuous operations with water cooling (such as large-scale projects and core sampling). However, it is more expensive and prone to overheating damage during dry drilling.

 

4. How to Use (Brief Steps)

 

1) Choosing a Drill Bit:

  • Select the appropriate size and type of drill bit based on the required hole diameter and the drill rig interface (such as the common M14 thread or SDS-Plus quick-connect shank).

 

2) Securing the Machine:

  • Use a dedicated stand (drill stand) to securely secure the hammer or drill to the work surface to prevent deviation.

 

3) Start Drilling:

  • First, drill a small, shallow indentation into the wall at a low speed and a slight angle.
  • Then, keeping the drill bit perpendicular to the wall, gradually increase the speed and pressure, advancing at a steady speed.

 

4) Precautions:

  • If encountering rebar: If you encounter rebar, drill slowly and steadily. Avoid impact, as this will severely damage the diamond layer.
  • Cooling Down: When dry drilling, withdraw the drill bit after each drilling depth to remove dust and help dissipate heat.
  • Safety: Always wear goggles, a dust mask, and gloves.
